Fishing has been the mainstay of life in Shetland for thousands of years. Today it remains the most important sector of the local economy.
Being equi-distant from the UK mainland, Norway and the Faroe Islands places the Shetland Islands strategically at the heart of Europe’s richest fishing grounds. Prolific cod, haddock, whiting and monkfish fishing grounds are right on our doorstep.
Shetland is fortunate to have a modern fishing fleet supplying its markets. The fleet comprises of small under-10 metre vessels right up to 80 metre pelagic super trawlers.
The smaller boats land their catches daily, the bigger boats land twice weekly, and the larger trawlers tend to land weekly. Simpson and Ward’s buyers select the best fish to suit their customer’s requirements.
